Elder Nomination

Jesus-Ruled, Elder-Led, Deacon-Served and Congregationaly-Responsible Church

Overview

Elders are called to serve among and provide spiritual protection for the Church body and are accountable to Christ and the Church membership. According to the Bible, Elders are to provide leadership for the Church through prayer, the ministry of the Word, and pastoral care and are to set the example for all Church members by their obedience to the mission of Christ and His Church (Matthew 28:18-20; Acts 6:3-4; 20:28-31; 1 Corinthians 4:14-16; 1 Timothy 3:2; 5:17; Hebrews 13:7, 17; 1 Peter 5:1-4).

Selection Process

Identifying, training, and installing church elders is an essential and rigorous process. And the health of the local church is dependent on the spiritual health, character, and giftedness of those who hold this office. We know that when those who are biblically qualified, trained and mobilized are set apart to enter the office of elder, then the church will most certainly benefit from God’s rich blessing through their labor of love. Below you can see an overview of the Eldership Process that begins with nomination and concludes with installation.

Nomination

If you desire to nominate an individual to be an elder, then complete the form, evaluating each question honestly based on your knowledge of the nominee’s qualifications for the office of Elder at Athens Church. Please take time to read 1 Timothy 3:1-11, Titus 1:5-9, and 1 Peter 5:1-4, which describe the qualifications of Elders, before completing the form.

It’s important to note that while no one can claim to meet these qualifications in an absolute sense, it must be evident that anyone who is called by God and aspires to the office of elder is generally characterized by them. It is vitally important that a church remembers all of these things as they prayerfully consider and identify those who God might be raising up to lead in this office.

You may fill out the form online below or download a hard copy of the form and return it to the church.
